Word of the Week for October 26th

How many of us spend 30 minutes a day reading the newspaper or surfing the internet? How many of us spend more than 2 hours a day watching television? How many of us spend 5 minutes reading God’s Word?

Perhaps you are a person who spends more time than that reading the Bible, but statistics tell us that less than 8% of Christians spend 5 minutes reading God’s Word each day! How do we get to know Him, if we don’t read about Him?

Beginning in January, I want to challenge you to join me in reading through the Bible. We are going to make this very easy for you. We will purchase the Bible for you and get it in your hands. The cost of the Bible is only $20 and we will get you whatever version you would like. Just call the church office, and let Sharon know what version you would like or put money in the offering plate for a Bible and we will order you one. I hope we all will commit to reading His Word in 2009!

Have a great week!

Word of the Week for October 19th

I loved the cool breeze that blew in this past week. It was so nice to enjoy the rain and feel the touch of fall hit the air. It got me in the mood for our Fall Fun Fest coming up next week. This is one of the great ways we reach out into our community throughout the year. On Wednesday, October 29th, from 6-8pm, we will host for the community an evening of games, face painting, food and lots and lots of candy.

I hope you will plan on being here to help greet people and make them feel welcome as they come to visit our church. I also happen to know there is still a need for people to help work the booths and serve food in the kitchen. If you want to have a wonderful time and enjoy some great conversation alongside fellow church members, then this is for you.

Sign up today on the bulletin board by the choir room and get ready for a Fun Fest good time! Our children’s ministry always does a great job with this occasion, so go ahead . . . invite someone you know to come and enjoy the event.

Have a great week!

Word of the Week for October 12th

What a great weekend this has been! Friday night was homecoming for Grandview, and I know many of you got to see and spend time with friends you have not seen in a while. Saturday was the hype of Texas and Oklahoma's Red River Rivalry, but today is the highlight of the weekend!

You might think I say that because of the brunch we are having for Staff Appreciation. Although that is nice, it is not the highlight. THE HIGHLIGHT is the opportunity to gather together corporately to worship our Lord together. I hope you get as excited about worship as I do, and you have an incredible worship experience today!

Have a great week!

Word of the Week for October 5th

As our church grows, we will run into growing pains along the way. There are two types of problems to have as a church . . . good problems and bad problems. I want to draw your attention to a good problem.

While watching our attendance grow in the 11:00 worship service, we have also seen our attendance grow in our Wiggle Worms, extended session and nursery ministry. What a blessing these children are to our church. The problem is that we need more help to minister to them. We have been asking for a while now for help in these areas, and now we are begging!!!

If you have a desire to help minister (and I stress minister for that is what it is) in these areas, would you please contact Michelle and let her know you are willing to help. What a privilege to help mold the next generation into Godly young men and women. Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

Have a great week!

“My Favorite Things”

Do you remember the Sound of Music song, “My Favorite Things?” Sing along:

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,
Brown paper packages tied up with string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes,
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes,
Silver white winters that melt into spring,
These are a few of my favorite things.

I know you are very glad I am not with you singing right now . . . it would be scary!!!! But as I write this, I am humming “My Favorite Things” and I want to share with you some of my favorite things (or people).

Daniel— He is far from “raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,” but does he ever have a soft side. He has a passion for Christ that is endless. He is self motivated and does an awesome job at everything he does (perhaps with the exception of mowing the yard!!).

Bill— He has a softness about him that does remind me of “whiskers on kittens.” Bill has been in the ministry for a long time, but still has a desire to lead people in genuine worship and brings incredible organization and structure to our staff.

Ryan, Raney, Nick, Shawna, and Brodie— The Praise Band — A group who loves each other and works so well together leading us in our contemporary worship service on a weekly basis. These guys have a desire to not only lead in worship but to be worshippers. I am reminded of “silver white winters that melt into spring,” when these guys are fluidly transitioning our worship times together.

Lynn and Denise— When I think of the song “My Favorite Things,” I wonder if these two could play it? Then I realize just how talented these two are on the piano and organ and know that is a silly question. It is so fun to watch these ladies use the gifts God has given.

Michelle— How can you not think of “girls in white dresses” when you think of Michelle? She does such a wonderful job of leading our children programs and ministering to all our children and their families. She has such a sweet spirit about her as she goes about her daily routine and is so patient not only with the children but sometimes with the pastor, too!!!

Sharon— When I think of Sharon, I think of “bright copper kettles” because I believe sometimes she wants to whack the rest of us in the office on the head with one. She does such a great job of running the office and making sure everything runs as smoothly as possibly (and sometimes whacks us around when we need it!).

Cindy— Cindy makes sure our financial information is clean and tidy like “brown paper packages tied up with string.” She does a fantastic job in the area of finance and has a great attitude while doing it.

Wally and Mike— These two guys make me think of “woolen mittens” because they roll their sleeves up and take the gloves off to make sure our building is always ready for whatever is about to take place. They do a great job of keeping things cleaned up and fresh.

Julie and Kaitlyn— These two ladies get to chase “snowflakes on eye lashes” with our children in the nursery. They do a wonderful job of loving on our children on a regular basis.

Do you think I have lost my mind? Why am I telling you all of this? This month is Staff Appreciation Month and I am so glad to be privileged to work with each of these people. As a church I believe we are blessed to have each one on staff. On October 12th we will be having a churchwide brunch in their honor during the Sunday School hour. I hope you will either stay following the early service or come a little early for the late service and say a word of appreciation to each of these or drop them a quick note to express your appreciation to them.

I am glad to be a part of a wonderful staff in a wonderful church!
